Websitepulse 2017 Mother's Day Performance & Uptime Report Summary

2017 Mother’s Day has passed and we have finished monitoring 12 of the most popular gift shopping websites for our 2017 Mother’s Day Report.

For the purpose of this Performance Report, WebSitePulse as usual measures not only the performance of the websites home pages, but measures a complete web transaction representative for the end users' interactions with a website as well.

The report measures Uptime and Response Time as the most important metrics for the availability and the reliability of any web-based operation, critical for the end users' overall online experience. Measurements of the multi-step online transactions are made every 15 minutes, simultaneously from 3 different monitoring locations: Washington DC (US East Coast), San Francisco, CA (US West Coast) and Chicago, IL (US Central).

The overall performance of the majority of the monitored gift shopping websites demonstrated their preparedness to meet the challenges of the expected heavy web traffic during the Mother’s Day week.

We have found out the daily average response time from all monitored websites was 3.608 sec. The daily average responses by locations are as follow:
  • Washington DC (US East Coast) – 3.612 sec
  • San Francisco, CA (US West Coast) – 3.673 sec
  • Chicago, IL (US Central) – 3.540 sec

This year, after one year being third, personalizationmall.com once again lead the speed chart with an average response time of 0.526 seconds, followed by fromyouflowers.com (0.760 sec) and sees.com (1.239 sec). Far away at the bottom of the table was beyondblossoms.com with 9.470 seconds average response time caused by some big availability issues the last four days of the monitored period.
The daily average uptime for the entire group of 12 websites for 2017 Mother’s Day shopping season was 97.46%. The daily average uptime by locations are as follow:
  • Washington DC (US East Coast) – 97.46%
  • San Francisco, CA (US West Coast) – 97.46%
  • Chicago, IL (US Central) – 97.46%

All the monitored websites were available with no interruptions (100% uptime) for the first 7 days of the monitored period. Eleven websites' availability remain at 100% for the rest of the monitored period, while one site dragged the uptime average down to 97.46% uptime. The site in question is beyondblossoms.com which was doing pretty good until May 12th when it went down until after the Mother’s Day and became available again on May 15th. Our investigation lead to the conclusion beyondblossoms.com had major problems with their DNS. If they were alerted the second we detected their problem they could have reacted accordingly and could have minimize their losses.

Methodology:
The 2016 Mother's Day Reports reflect a complete web transaction, representative for the End Users' interactions with a website. The reporting period covers the dates between Apr 30 and May 8, 2016. Performance and availability measurements are made for a typical multi-step web transaction at 15 minute monitoring interval, every day 24/7. The WebSitePulse application monitoring service is used to collect data and to create the reports.
The steps in each transaction are comparable for all websites, and reflect the real online shopper experience. The simultaneous monitoring is performed from 3 US-based locations of the WebSitePulse monitoring network: San Francisco, CA, Chicago, IL, and Washington, DC. In case of a detected malfunction or unavailability, the system performs automated error verification from 3 independent resources and only after the above procedure is performed and has returned consistent results, the detected error is confirmed, recorded, and included in the daily performance reports. In these cases, an advanced WebSitePulse exclusive feature comes into play - Forced Monitoring -, which automatically switches to a 3 minute monitoring interval for increased accuracy.

About WebSitePulse:
WebSitePulse is a leading provider of global, independent, and objective availability and performance monitoring of web sites, servers, network components, web applications, e-business- and email round-trip transactions.
