WebSitePulse 2023 Hurricane Season Web Performance Report Summary

The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season is now over. It was a near-normal season, but it was still a reminder of the importance of hurricane preparedness.

The season began slowly, but activity peaked in the second half, with several major hurricanes making landfall in the Caribbean and the southeastern United States.

The Atlantic hurricane season was slightly above the 30-year average. In 2023, in the Atlantic basin, we observed the following:
  • 1 Tropical depression (Twenty-One)
  • 12 Tropical storms (Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Gert, Emily, Harold, Jose, Katia, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, and Sean)
  • 1 Subtropical storm (Unnamed)
  • 2 Category 1 hurricanes (Don and Margot)
  • 2 Category 2 hurricanes (Nigel and Tammy)
  • 2 Category 4 hurricanes (Franklin and Idalia)
  • 1 Category 5 hurricane (Lee)
The total damage from the Atlantic storms is over $2.59 billion, and 12 deaths.

The 2023 Pacific hurricane season began early in June. Activity continued throughout the season, with several major hurricanes making landfall in Mexico and Central America. It was significantly above the 30-year average. In 2023, in the Pacific basin, we observed the following:
  • 3 Tropical depressions (Four-E, Twelve-E, and Fourteen-E)
  • 6 Tropical storms (Eugene, Greg, Irwin, Kenneth, Max, and Pilar)
  • 1 Category 1 hurricane (Beatriz)
  • 1 Category 2 hurricane (Adrian)
  • 1 Category 3 hurricane (Calvin)
  • 5 Category 4 hurricanes (Dora, Fernanda, Hilary, Lidia, and Norma)
  • 2 Category 5 hurricanes (Jova and Otis)
The total damage from the storms in the Pacific base is over $614.7 million and 54 deaths. Along with the end of the 2023 Hurricane Season, we have finished tracking five of the most popular weather forecast websites for our annual Hurricane Season Report.

For this Performance Report, we at WebSitePulse monitoring service measured the websites' home pages' performance and complete interaction with the website as an end-user would do.

The report measures Uptime and Response Time as the most critical metrics for all web-based operations' availability and reliability. Measurements of the multi-step online transactions were made every 15 minutes simultaneously from 3 different monitoring locations: Trumbull, CT (US East Coast), San Francisco, CA (US West Coast), and Chicago, IL (US Central).

The overall uptime and speed of the monitored weather websites were quite good during the whole period, except for trackthetropics.com. We found that all monitored websites' daily average response time was 1.667 sec. The daily average responses by location are as follows:
  • Trumbull, CT (US East Coast) – 1.384 sec
  • San Francisco, CA (US West Coast) – 2.129 sec
  • Chicago, IL (US Central) – 1.518 sec
For the sixth year, The National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) was the speed leader among the five monitored websites, with an average response time of 0.406 seconds, followed by floridadisaster.org (0.685 sec). At the bottom of the table was trackthetropics.com, with 4.987 seconds average response time, which may have frustrated many visitors.

Compared to last year's performance, the two leaders increased their response time by an average of 0.128 seconds, while the slowest site this year performed on average 4.84 seconds slower than in the 2022 Hurricane Season monitored period.

The daily average uptime for the five websites for the 2023 hurricane season was almost 100%. The daily average uptime by location is as follows:
  • Trumbull, CT (US East Coast) – 100%
  • San Francisco, CA (US West Coast) – 100%
  • Chicago, IL (US Central) – 99.99%
This year's uptime winner is redcross.org, which was available with no interruptions, closely followed by weather.com with 99.998% uptime. At the bottom of the availability chart, this year stands trackthetropics.com with 99.985%, which means it was not accessible to visitors for more than 18 minutes during the monitored period.

Report Methodology:
WebSitePulse Performance Reports measure Uptime and Response Time as the most important metrics for the availability and the reliability of any web-based operation. Performance measurement took place daily, every 15 minutes during the entire Hurricane season, between the hours of 6AM and 3AM EST. The WebSitePulse website monitoring service was used to collect data and to create the reports.
The simultaneous monitoring is performed from 3 US locations of the WebSitePulse monitoring network: Trumbull, CT, San Francisco, CA and Chicago, IL. In case of a detected malfunction or unavailability, the system performs automated error verification from 3 independent resources and only after the above procedure is performed and has returned consistent results, the detected error is confirmed, recorded, and included in the daily performance reports. In these cases, an advanced WebSitePulse exclusive feature comes into play - Forced Monitoring - which automatically switches to a 3 minute - monitoring interval for increased accuracy.

About WebSitePulse:
WebSitePulse is a leading provider of global, independent, and objective availability and performance monitoring of web sites, servers, network components, web applications, e-business- and email round-trip transactions.
