Turkish hacker group known as "NetDevilz" broke into two of the most established international Websites that oversee and regulate the Internet in order to reroute visitors to a rogue domain.
Two of the domains under attack include the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN, icann.org) and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA, iana.org) - two organizations that have dominion over numerous critical functions regarding Internet regulation.
Users who tried to reach iana.com, iana-servers.com, icann.com and icann.net were shunted to an illegitimate site. The bogus site displayed a taunting message: "You think that you control the domains but you don't! Everybody knows wrong. We control the domains including ICANN! Don't you believe us?"
IANA, ironically, is the organization responsible for managing the DNS (domain name system) root zone and assigning the DNS operators for the Internet top-level domains, such as .com and .org. ICANN, which oversees IANA, also allocates IP address space and manages the Web top-level domain naming system.
Part of any company's website monitoring strategy should be monitoring several of the most critical web pages and their content to prevent website defacement. Since a simple server monitoring will not detect such an event, it can go undetected for a long time, or until customers and media start talking about it.
